F1 Canadian GP 2024 LIVE: Race updates and times in Montreal

Sergio Perez Signs New Two-Year Deal With Red Bull

Max Verstappen overcame the weather and capitalised on a well-timed safety car to thwart Lando Norris and George Russell and win an action-packed Canadian Grand Prix.

Norris came alive in changeable conditions to take the lead having started third but, in a role reversal from Miami, was undone by the timing of the safety car and had to settle for second.

Pole-sitter Russell endured an incident-filled race but saw off team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages to claim Mercedes’ first podium of the season.

Russell took pole having set an identical time to Verstappen during a thrilling qualifying session on Saturday, where the top seven were separated by less than three tenths of a second.

Martin Brundle praised for ‘beautiful interview’ with female racing pioneer Mary McGee in Canada

The Sky Sports F1 broadcaster was undertaking his usual pre-race grid walk when he encountered McGee in a wheelchair.

The 87-year-old was the first woman to compete in motorcycle road racing and motocross events in the United States back in the 1960s, as she explained to ex-F1 driver Brundle.

Lewis Hamilton fumes at his own performance in Canada: ‘It was shocking’

Lewis Hamilton said his race was “shocking” as Mercedes were left to rue a missed opportunity at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Silver Arrows have been making progress over recent weeks and showed blistering pace at times in the changeable conditions this weekend, with Russell taking pole and both cars looking fast during the race.

Ultimately Russell claimed the team’s first podium of the season, behind winner Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, passing Hamilton in the closing stages to finish third. Both appeared to be in the battle for victory in an action-packed race which featured two safety cars and frequent periods of rain, but the two drivers were critical of their display.

“It was a pretty disastrous afternoon yesterday and today the race was shocking,” Hamilton said.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff:

“A victory was maybe a long shot or short dream, when George was on the hard – but you must not be too greedy.

On Russell’s mistakes: “Maybe there was one or two that he could have avoided but we have to take the positive, the car has made a step forward. [The one with Piastri] was maybe a bit ambitious. I think P2 was on in the end.”

George Russell after finishing third:

“It felt like a missed opportunity to be honest. Made a couple of mistakes out there, pushing to the limits, paid the price for it. But podium nonetheless.

“We had the pace, the incident with Oscar cost us P2. But first podium and pole position, we’ll take it. It was hard, fair racing.”

Lando Norris after finishing second:

“It was chaos, eventful! I felt like I drove a good race, the first two stints were very strong. The safety car had me over, like Miami but other way around! It was stressful inside the car but so enjoyable at the same time.

“Things were going beautifully but it’s Montreal, fair play to Max he drove a good race. I’m happy with second.”
