Blues to assert superiority again

There’s no love lost between these London rivals and today marks the eighth anniversary of their infamous ‘Battle of the Bridge’ – the 2016 meeting in which Chelsea came from 2-0 to draw 2-2, ending Spurs’ title hopes and confirming Leicester City as champions.

Chelsea have not only had the edge in terms of trophy success but they have also enjoyed regular success over Spurs in the head-to-head stats.

The Blues have lost just one of the last 10 meetings – winning six of those encounters, including a 4-1 success at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November.

You have to go back to April 2018 for the last time Spurs won at Stamford Bridge, when Dele Alli scored twice in a 3-1 success.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have shown signs of improvement in recent months and go into this game unbeaten in their previous six matches in all competitions at the Bridge – five wins and a draw.

In contrast, Tottenham – who are 12 points ahead of their opponents – head across London having won just one of their last seven on the road.

Palmer the man to watch

Cole Palmer has 20 Premier League goals to his name and has scored in each of the past five games at Stamford Bridge.

In the last three home matches, Palmer has scored nine goals – four in the 6-0 win over Everton, three in the victory over Manchester United and two in the draw with Burnley.

The 21-year-old is fifth in the Premier League stats for shots on target with 41 – an average of 1.24 per game across his 33 league appearances.

He is likely to get plenty of chances against a Spurs team who have conceded 52 goals and kept just six clean sheets in 33 league games this season, and is also his side’s penalty taker.

Goals and cards look likely

These teams have scored 130 goals between them in the league this season and recent meetings would suggest there will be a few more on Thursday. Their previous five Premier League encounters have produced 16 goals at an average of 3.2 per game.

Their matches can often be spicy, physical affairs, as evidenced by this season’s clash at Spurs, when there were five yellow cards and two reds. The Blues top the league in yellow cards this season – with 97 – while Spurs are seventh with 78.

Summer signing Moises Caicedo has the most yellows of any Chelsea squad member, with 10 in 30 games, while team-mate Marc Cucurella has picked up three yellow cards in his last seven games.

Yves Bissouma heads the Tottenham yellow card standings, with eight in 25 Premier League games. Backing all three of the former Brighton players to be booked and both teams to score gives us a bet builder that has odds of 40/1.
