In this week’s Thursday Night Football matchup between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, you shouldn’t expect many points. When the Patriots vs. Steelers odds opened on Sunday night, nobody was surprised to see the total set at a very low number of 32.5. But the number has already dropped to 30.5, which would be one of the lowest totals we’ve ever seen in an NFL game.
Patriots vs. Steelers Odds: Lowest Total In 18 Years
As mentioned, as of right now, the total for the Week 14 Thursday Night Football game between the Patriots and Steelers is at 30.5.
According to Evan Abrams at The Action Network, this would be the lowest total in an NFL game since Week 14 of 2005 when it was 30 — which coincidentally also featured the Steelers. Weather was a strong factor for this low total, with a mix of snow and wind in Pittsburgh, as the Steelers beat the Bears 21-9 — making it a push for any total bettor.
Anyone who has watched the Patriots in recent weeks isn’t surprised by this historically low total. On Sunday, New England became the first team since 1938 to lose three straight games where they allowed 10 points or fewer. While their defense has been really impressive during this stretch, this stat is more of an indictment of their offense, which, to put it kindly, has been lifeless.
While Pittsburgh has a much better offense than New England, they’re still one of the worst units in the NFL, averaging just 16 points per game this season — only better than the Panthers, Jets, Giants, and Patriots.
To make matters worse, it appears the Steelers will be without starting QB Kenny Pickett, as Mitchell Trubisky is set to make his first start of the season on a short week.
If you’re interested in taking the under in this game but you’re scared off by the low total, think again. Since 2020, unders in games with totals of 37 or less are 23-4-1, including 3-0 in the last two weeks.
Even with oddsmakers making adjustments over the course of the season to the totals for Patriots and Steelers games, the under is still a combined 19-5 between them in 2023.
