Auto Trader revealed the city is ninth on the list after analysing more than 32,000 biking tour routes.

Bristol, Liverpool, and Newcastle upon Tyne made up the top three, with a high number of easy and intermediate level bike rides.

The research focused on ‘bike-touring’ routes on the Komoot app, omitting ‘Mountain Biking’ and ‘Road Cycling’ trails while also excluding routes rated ‘Expert’.

The study examined less strenuous routes featuring quieter lanes and cycle paths, ideal for beginners and intermediate cyclists.

Oxford boasts 553 easy or intermediate bike riding routes, offering cyclists a relaxed and enjoyable ride.

Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: “The adoption of electric bikes is opening up how people can explore urban areas, and really helping people get more sight-seeing, adventure and value out of their city breaks.

“Our list reveals a lovely cross-section of UK cities…that provide the perfect conditions for leisure cyclists to explore this spring.”

Elsewhere in the top 10 were Cambridge, Edinburgh, Norwich and Nottingham.

The study also explored international cities, listing Bristol and Liverpool as the world’s ninth and 13th best for relaxed cycling routes.

Brussels, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt are the top-ranking cities, each boasting more than 900 easy-to-intermediate level bike routes.
